Birth Charts
I am one of those who regards Astrology with the same skepticism (hopefully no more nor less) that I do any supernatural propositions. We all know the objection - how can the perceived configuration of stars and planets far removed from this world have anything to do with who I am and what my life will be like?

The best explanation I have been given (one of those explanations that make perfect sense in the telling but one can somehow never convey to others effectively) is that in this complex and holistic universe a random method of sampling parts of the totality can tell one something of other parts of that totality. I think.

As long as nobody gets taken for a ride then I figure it is all just a bit of fun these days. But why stars and planets? What of other random things happening in the universe at the time of our birth. It is then - for the sake of fun you understand - that I propose here prediction of ones personality and fate via the popular song!

Check this site. It allows one to find the song that was Number 1 on any date in the past few decades. One can quickly discover the most popular song on the date of ones birth (or indeed on any and all of ones subsequent birthdays). Maybe Lean On Me tells me as much about who I am as does the constellation of Cancer. There is a lot of information in a recorded song from the words themselves to the way they are sung and the instruments and arrangements presented.

What does your birthdate popular tune say about you?

Cross-posted here.

Check this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maniac_(song)

The song originally _was_ about a crazy person. In the song we know however it describes a very talented and driven person.

My birthdate popular tune says that I wanted to be born in 1983. Africa by Toto was number one on my 3rd birthday.

Hey did you know that Toto did the soundtrack for the 80s movie of Dune? (there is some Brian Eno in there too but it is mostly Toto - basically a whole lot of syth and electric guitar instrumentals).

Too Much Heaven, by the BeeGees. I have a tendency towards excess? I'm too optimistic? Wow those records go a way back! If I'd been born in the 40s or 50s, my 'song sign' would have been a christmas song.

Scientific research has been into various forms of divination, and the overriding explaination seems to be that it's mostly psychological. If New Scientist writes it up, this is perceived to be a bad thing. Bollocks I say! Psychology is a wonderful thing, and our brains should be given lots of credit for the insight we can give ourselves.

The common misconception about divination is that it gives a definitive scenario for your future. I am often asked if this is a case, and the answer is definitely NO! The idea of divination is to give yourself a moment to pause and think about possible outcomes if you continue in the direction you are doing so. The planets, cards and #1 songs are merely tools. What's important is that you took the time to think about how 'Lean on Me' could relate to you, and for instance, wonder if you are a source of support to others, and if this is a good or a bad thing. If you receive assistance with this, how you came to it is irrelevant.

"The idea of divination is to give yourself a moment to pause and think about possible outcomes..."

As a trigger to contemplation I can see that can be useful. Mind you I sometimes think we can just decide to introspect from scratch rather than need that trigger.

On the front of contemplating outcomes of actions I rather enjoy speculative fiction. Everything from Sliders to A Christmas Carol by Dickens. They get you into the mindset of thinking about cause and effect.

You get blamed for things you deny? Or you blame others for things they deny? Or you are good to dance to? (-8}

"It's Still Rock And Roll To Me" - Billy Joel.

... I like lots of sorts of music? Really, that song doesn't speak to me much at all. Maybe I'd need to find the number-one song in Australia for that date.

Unfortunately the ARIA charts only go back to 1988 I think. However this site can give you UK hits: http://www.everyhit.com/dates/

I am a Billy Joel fan but that is hardly his best track. Still I think you can look beyond the chorus to see it expresses the opinion of someone who rejects the dictates of fashion and decides for themselves what they like...

It's also interesting to note that I have no idea about any of the songs after 1995. I know so little about popular culture.

I can relate. I only really followed the charts between 88 and 92. Thereafter my musical interests were dictated by friends (hence I know something of 90s alternative or gothic stuff) or by my own delving into music _older_ than 88. Most of the 00s are a closed door to me.
